Meetup is seeking a self-motivated and entrepreneurial systems engineer to join our NYC based team to help us scale the service. Do you enjoy finding creative ways to squeeze out extra performance out of code, databases, and infrastructure? Do you see solutions others don`t? Do you value pragmatism over dogma? Are you at a point in your career where you want to teach and mentor others, while at the same time still be able to spend much, if not most of your time with your hands in the technology? Do you love web technology? Do you have web side projects that you work on for fun?
Meetup is a Java shop built on mostly open source software (Apache, Linux, MySQL, Memcached, MogileFS, Hbase/Hadoop, etc). We are a company that values doers over talkers, mentors over managers, and self-management over bureaucracy. We are a company where people who take risks and win are rewarded and grow. We are seeking an experienced Leader/Doer to lead our systems team, with the primary focus on performance, capacity, and reliability of the Meetup.com service.
You would be responsible for:
* Being a leader and a coach to the systems team.
* Health of the production, development, and QA infrastructure.
* The data environment (MySQL and Hadoop/Hbase).
* Proposing *and* implementing architecture changes (systems, data model or code) in order to make architecture more scalable/reliable.
* Developing and launching a rapid disaster recovery plan.
* Being a senior leader in the company ... more mentors are always needed and wanted.
The right person:
* Has solid UNIX/Linux Administration skills.
* Has the ability to code and enjoys doing so.
* Has experience managing a high traffic MySQL/Innodb environment.
* Has scaled systems with little budget (we have the ability to buy solutions, but it`s not too impressive to hear about people scaling on a large budget).
* Values working as part of a team over being the solo hero.
* Has the ability and the desire to be *very* hands on.
* Can`t imagine not working at a startup.
* Is a self manager and loves to get things quickly without sacrificing quality.
